    Tahoe in December?...

I have a free ticket from United that I need to use before 31 Dec 04. So, naturally, I thought of getting some freshies with the Tahoe group. The dates I'm looking at in Dec are 10-12 Dec. Anybody around to show me a good time? I still need to confirm with United that my free ticket is valid those dates and convince Mrs. T that I need to go to Tahoe to ride. She is still a little skeptical about the nature of my online friends. Meeting mehug in person did nothing to alleviate those fears.

Well, last year life wasn't too bad in early December. This year, I have no clue. You're looking at something like the 2nd-3rd week of the season for most Tahoe places. Conditions could be anything.

If you can swing it, I'd go for it. Worse case is you spend more time gambling and hanging out that boarding...

And yah, I could be game for being up there if the snow permits...

I'm not much of a gambler so I hope there is snow.

I'm poor, so I go to Boreal. It's a decent hill if you have someone to show you around. Not that it's large, but you gotta know when to go to what areas to avoid the masses. My wife and I are there every Saturday morning at 8:30, lifts open at 9:00, we disappear to our spots before the shoobies get their gear rented. I'd love to hook up and show you around, but it's likely you'll want to hit up a bigger mountain....

    I like the idea

I might be up for a sip 'n' slide session up Tahoe way in December. I'll probably be doing a b-day weekend in Mammoth or June Lake on the 11th/12th, if that in any way ties in with your plans. Love to have you there (as well as anyone else from the message board), or I'd be up for driving up north from there to meet y'all.

    I'm adventurous...

I'll probably have a car so getting there may not be too hard. How far away from Tahoe is Boreal?

Mammoth might be a bit far for me to drive but not that far for you to drive. I'll keep everyone posted on the plans.

Sounds good... Keep us in the loop, and we'll see how the weather cooperates. The temps up there are starting to play along, so it's just time to wait and see....

Boreal is on I-80 about 7 miles west of Truckee. Tahoe is a big lake, if you're on the north side, it's only about 30-40 minutes to Boreal. If you're planning on staying on the livelier south side, it'd be maybe an hour and a half. I don't know, I've never driven from the south side casino area to the north side resorts.

This link gives you a pretty good idea of how the area is laid out. Ask someone else about the drive around the lake....

    I'd fly into Reno...

so I'll make my base there. An hour and a half drive in good weather won't be too difficult.

I was going to suggest Reno. Mt. Rose is 30 minutes away and Boreal is 45. Rose is nice because it's base elevation is higher than anything else in the area, could be a factor that eraly in the season. Boreal won't be worth going to if the perimeter lifts aren't open (Lost Dutchman specifically). If the outer lifts and backside are closed, it's idiot city. But if the whole mountain is open, we could go the whole morning and not see a single line at the lifts, for $36 it's hard to go wrong.

But Reno would be a good base to launch from, even South Shore resorts wouldn't be hard to get to, as I understand Kirkwood is popular with most the NorCal folks on this board.....

I'll probably ride on Fri, Sat, and half day on Sun as the flight I'm looking at leaves Reno at 4PM.

Reno is not a bad place to make a base out of. Cheap Hotels, and still close enough to get to the bigger ski places. The only place that would really be out of the way to get to would be Kirkwood, as it's another 30-60 minutes out of South Lake.

As it get's close, we can figure on the details. No worries... Just pray for snow, and the rest will work itself out.

    OK, it's a go...

I have booked my flights, I have a rental car, the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Sparks, NV is expecting me, and most importantly, Mrs. T is cool with me going (no orgies though;) ). So I'm flying in the night of Thursday the 9th of December and leaving late afternoon on Sunday the 12th. Who's going to show me a good time?

Well I will be at Boreal on Saturday, whether the whole mountain is open or not. So as long as you don't mind a smaller hill, and no one else has a better plan for you for Saturday, we're gold....

And as long as she's coming, she's happy... :/

Anyway, real winter is over rated.... I'm sure we'll have a blast with what'ev we get. Some of my more memorable days last season were in less than stellar snow conditions.

And yes E, maybe we'll skip that hike this time around. No matter how tasty it looks from down below... BTW, did Heavenly get that new lift in that they were talking about on the Nevada side? Haven't heard anything...

No they didn't. Which is kind of good. The upgraded lift is on the cali side, which is needed & actually has good terrain. I don't ride there too often, takes forever to get over there. They are opening up the terrain known as Fire Break. They will have 2 gated entrances so you can ride from the top to the casinos. Really not sure how they are going to manage that. I guess it's better than getting arrested. I think its 3000 to 3500' vert of fairly steep tree riding. Might be one of the biggest & best runs this side of the Mississippi.
Needs lots of snow, lots of crap to cover.

Cool.. That's actually good to hear regarding the chair, etc... I mean sure, it'd be nice ot shorten the turn around time from bottom to top on the backside, but don't want to make it too easy for folks less deserving of the good lines.. ;)

As for Fire-Break. I have yet to make that ride, but it's nice to know it won't be illegal now at least. We'll see how this winter does for us... I figure it'll be crappy weekend snow, and awesome midweek powder as I'll be stuck behind a desk most of this season... Ah well...

Yah, figured it'd be your "shop". Besides, Audi's are like Malamutes. They really aren't happy unless they are sleeping in the snow too..

Ah moving, I'd offer to help and all, but, um, I'm busy working... ya, that's it...

And in the meantime, snow keeps falling. Latest forecast shows chance of snow through Wednesday... This might actually make for a good base yet. I'm just hoping hwy50 doesn't wash out after the fires and then with all the rain... Happened a few years back and made for some REALLY BAD times commuting to south lake over the winter...

Thanks for not offering,I'll be sure to remember that when the roads are closed & you need to stay in Tahoe. Actually I have lots of offers, but it's one thing to offer it's another to actually do it. I have time,so it should be fairly painless. Weird thing, I can hear Santana playing next door. Cause he is. This guy I know, is recording with him in his studio.

Well, we got snow coming, just in time. 'Sposta snow Sun, Mon, and Tue, and stay cold. Looking like Boreal should be wide open by the time you come. Can't wait, bought a new digital camera for the occasion.

Well, not really, Circuit City had a doorbuster on Friday after Thanksgiving - stood outside - hence the cold But it was a really good deal with a free 128mb MP3 player!

    See ya next weekend Tantrum!
