you should read up on Count Rumford (look around that site)...he was a contemporary of Benjamin Franklin but had to run to Europe since he supported the British in the war!!
his fireplace design is tall and shallow with a clay "throat". The opening into the chimney is only about 4 inches wide creating a venturi type effect....you get mad draw and no smoke!!
