k2 says their boards come detuned. is this true? or is this the same as them saying their boards come waxed?

They do come waxed(all boards do), but I can't remeber how/if they're detuned. I'll check tomorrow and let you know. I'm in MD, where are you located there?

Cool, I'm outside Frederick. If this year's models are detuned(their catlog does not appear to mentiuon that they are) it's VERY slight to the point of not being certain if they are or not when I looked:). If you want your's detuned then I'd suggest going ahead and doing it per standard.
