Hello, I'm new here...

Anyone here ever tent camping out near the ocean on Long Island, NY?
I am thinking of planning a trip out there and but with so many
choices I want to make a good one.

Places in mind so far are
Indian Point
Cedar Point
Montauk

Of the places you mentioned I have only been to Cedar Point, but it is not on the ocean, rather the bay side on the south fork.
I have camped also at Smiths Point and Watch Hill. Smith's Point is like a parking lot and is like sleeping on a bunch of gravel. But if you get the right permit, you can go out further on the beach to camp. Watch Hill is a reservation system through the National Seashore. I didn't make the arrangements, so I don't know, but it's close to the ocean and a really nice park. If you make it over there, stop in at the snack shop and say hello to Al. He's a great guy and friend of mine.

wooh, sorry I guess my info isn't going to help considering you posted the question on 6/10. I saw Long Island and just starting typing. Anyway, I hope you had a good trip, and let us know where you went and how it was. That is if you're still around.

well it was great. thanks !
We went to Cedar Point about 3 weeks ago for one week.
Mid week its great out there. Where else can you stay in East Hampton
for $15 a night ?

The Bay side beach is nice a bit rocky but empty and just
a short walk from the camp site
Lotsa fun for the kids.

And the ocean side out on Montauk was beautiful.
Good waves and nice white sand. Parking wasnt bad, like $10 for a car
or something.

The mosquitos were the only thing that made things a bit difficult.
We could have used a little net tent. They were pretty active most of
the day. My son counted 62 bites on him. Maybe an exageration but
they were pretty fierce. Not sure if its like that all the time or just this
summer.

Otherwise the campground is nice, nice people not loud.
Though on the weekend it maybe different.
Fairly new shower and bath facilities and small store
on site.

I've kayak camped out on Fire Island National Seashore with a friend of mine. We kayaked from Smith's Point Park west a bit til we decided to camp on the secondary dunes (can't camp on the primary ones). You can get a permit (free) at the ranger station and then launch right on the ocean past the surfcasters. You can launch on the bayside too, but from what my friend says, it's harder to find a good spot to land cause of the vegetation and marshes.

You don't have to kayak to get to the camping area though, you can walk along the beach or inland (just don't trample the vegetation). Also, watch out for deer ticks, I hear that is a big problem there...
