I quit carrying candle lanterns after LED headlamps came out, I've started carrying one again, I just like the soft warm glow and shadows dancing on tent walls. I think a candle lantern can actually raise the temperature inside the tent a few degrees, maybe it's just in my head, but it still feels warmer.

i'm still afraid of them, the look is warm and comforting and i believe it helps dry the air in the tent,
but all my gear is plastic in some form and the thought of a heat melt/burn on my stuff scares me.
oh and there always the thought of duck pulling an indiana jones and reaching to close it up right after the he put the candle out and leaving a melted impression in the palm of his hand....... :o)

I've been eyeing up one of the UCO tea candle lanterns. Know anybody that's tried one?

and the candle lantern is the substitute. Could be a fire ban or in a desert locale.

flame, nylon, esp in winter when you are sealed up...might be a tad too much. now, summer night sleeping in nothing but a blanket and bivy sack? of course, esp in no-fire areas like below.

Now here's a candle lantern, the UCO three candle candolier. Weighing in at a svelte 21 ounces, it makes for a great bonfire right in the tent. Funny thing about this lantern is that the chimney (globe) and the body doesn't get very hot, you can touch it without gettin burned, but don' touch that top piece with the vents, it will fry you. Never known anyone to start a fire in the tent with a candle lantern, I'm sure it has happend, I've gotten a head full of hot wax before when I bumped a lantern.
(The pics are gone at the top of this thread because I completely cleaned out my picture site, I was out of room)

I carried one on one trip a few years ago, but found that I couldn't read my book by the light of it. If I got my face close enough to the book to read in the dim light, I couldn't see the writing any more. Ol' Mick was right: "What a drag it is getting old."

I haven't brought it since I got my LED headlamp, but I did like the warm glow and it did raise the temperature of the tent noticably. It also helped keep the frost at bay. Mine is a little UCO with one tea candle. I was not afraid of it melting anything or spilling wax if it fell over based on it's design. A clever little beast. Of course I didn't sleep with it burning either - THAT seemed dangerous. I may take one again if I go with another person and can share some of the gear weight.
