bought a few recently...

finally got the "product placement" disc from DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist...have heard little bits of it via downloads but the real product is awesome!

new Flogging Molly -Reverend should be happy
new Green Day, for old times sake, even though their last effort sounded eerily like the Travelling Willburys.
some old blackalicious, now that I've seen them on the pier with LazyLiz

anybody else want to share?

I bought Steven Kings book Dark Towers to help pass the 30 hours one way I drive to Florida next week...will arrive Friday, spend saturday and sunday racing my car at Sebring. See the friends and family for the weekdays, race the following saturday and sunday at homestead and then 30 hours back to denver. Anyone want to come help with the driving? :D

I think I'm going to need a few more books on CD...but that's not the kind of CD's you were talking about is it bro?

I'm in a slump... I did actually just purchase a few CD's, but nothing new to speak of. Just back filling for some stuff I had downloaded that I've enjoyed... I feel I'm in a bit of a music funk right now so I'm open to some suggestions. One thing you reminded me of Canuck is my need to cover the whole Deltron/Blackalicious/Hieroglyphics thang. I have some random songs here and there, but really want to fill in the gaps buy grabbing some CD's...

Anyway, what I just purchased:

Prodigy, some 2-cd set of singles and remixes from 2001.. has my fav "Charly" (meow) amongs other early Prodigy stuff... sale

Police "Ghost in the Machine" remastered - had the old record.. it was on sale..

Crystal Method "Legion of Boom" - driving music... their best effort since their first album.. not bad... I had downloaded it a while back and still play it a bit, so I bought it. On sale..

And some cheap 4-cd box set of "Chill" music... it was cheap, on sale, and I was hoping to find some stuff I liked but hadn't heard before... First impression is it's a bit too chill... But only half way through it...

canuck

Ya, there's Chill and then there's Comatose

I'm looking for some Howe Gelb, for personal reasons, thanks for the Shareaza tip, if I can figure out why the mp3's won't download for me, I'll be all set.

Let the "expert" answer your question! (proof of the pudding: last night I was dancing to bad disco and Milly-Vanilly at this party while wearing an outrageously big purple-wig)

So, what's pumping through my headphones latelly? certanly not milly, nor vanilly, but let me sort through some of the selections that I think may be up your alley...

* Bebe "Pafuera Telaranas", my mom just sent me this cd for my B-day, and it's growing on me, it took a couple of listens, but I dig it mucho.
* Bunbury "Viaje a Ninguna Parte", double cd, Spanish trouvador-pop-rock?
* Bushido "Bushido", it's hard to label stuff, and Spanish music has it's own particular sound, but yeah, I like it and I think you may too
* Oi Va Voi "Laughter through Tears" Mellow, deep, and really cool
* Otis Taylor "Truth is not Fiction" Bluesy and raw
* Mercedes Peon "Ajru" Thanks Marije for the recomendation!
* Jill Scott "Beautifully Human" bluesy-jazzy-r&b-hip-hop?
* The Briefs "Sex Objects" Awesome Seattle punk band, we have coffee together in the morning, and our kids go to the same school, what more can I say?
* The Hives "Tyrannosaurus Hives", if you have listened to The Hives before, you already know what they sound like.

So that's enough of a laundry list to get you googling, surfing and hopefully listening. Let me know what you think if you end up gettng any of them!

Dude, I was thinking about you last night! No, it wasn't a wet dream, but this party I was at on your neck of the woods, with lots of snowboarding peeps, gorgeous girls and guys, and wigs a go-go. Wanted to give you a call see if you and your girl felt like dropping by, but I had forgotten to put your # on my cell  , so instead I left a half drunk message to Elex, poor guy... LOL!

I am sure Elex loved it. We have been crazy buying a house. The whole process seems to suck the life outta you! You are well, I take it? I have also been taking night classes at the UW...so life is nutty. I am looking forward to snowbaording, and Rainier is looking very tempting.

Interpol are a bit too stuck in that 80's sound I didn't like back then....I should probably burn some of their stuff for Tantrum though.

I love PJ Harvey too!! Saw her live once, opening up for Smashing Pumpkins I think it was, and she nearly stole the show! Very cool and out there...
Have been meaning to check out the killers, and what needs to be said about the Kennedys?

One disc I won't be buying is the new, voice only, Bjork....

after struggling through her previous one (Verspertine) I think she has finally lost me.

One can never have too much 80s music.:D

are you sure you didn't see them opening for the Cure?!
:D

Biography by Andy Kellman
New York's Interpol reminds anyone who has ever heard post-punk bands like Joy Division and the Chameleons of those exact bands, plus a few more. The roots of the band — as far as its members are considered — can be traced back to a partnership between Daniel Kessler (a guitarist and vocalist) and a fellow New York University student named Greg Drudy (a drummer). Kessler struck up a friendship with another NYU student, Carlos Dengler, who had previously played guitar and felt like becoming involved with music for a second time. He took up the bass and keyboard duties. And by sheer coincidence, Kessler later bumped into Paul Banks, a guitarist/vocalist he knew from time spent in France. With the lineup settled, Interpol became a fully active band in 1998. After the band's first gigs in early 2000, Drudy vacated his position and was replaced by Sam Fogarino. They started playing out frequently, including regular appearances at clubs in and around New York like Brownie's and the Mercury Lounge. A brief tour of the U.K. in April of 2001 was punctuated by a radio session for John Peel's BBC program; at that point, the band was touring in support of a limited-edition EP released through the Chemikal Underground label's Fukd I.D. series. (They had also appeared on a compilation that was released just prior to Fukd I.D. called Clooney Tunes for another U.K. indie, Fierce Panda.) 2001 also saw a self-released EP from the band and another compilation appearance on Arena Rock's This Is Next Year, a double-disc set of Brooklyn-area acts. Matador signed the band in 2002 and issued a three-song single and the band's debut LP (Turn On the Bright Lights) by year's end. The album made the band indie stars, and extensive touring around the world followed. Just prior to releasing their second album (Antics) in September of 2004, they opened for the Cure as part of that band's Curiosa Festival.

Then the Killers will most likely be too much as well. Their sound has a distinct 80's feel to it. You may be visiting the bathroom again.

I really liked Joy Division(still do). Interpol reminds me of the sound J.D. had, but newer sounding.

Bjork. A friend has the new disc and cant decide if it is genius or evidence that she has finally drifted to the netherparts of the universe...probably hanging with Tricky. They both lost me a couple albums ago. I am sure neither one of them is actually human and the music they create is native to their little part of space.

I seem to have a fascination with Drunken Monkey going at the moment, and can't get the song Lowrider out of my head. A strange mix of tastes to be sure. Petey Pablo still rolls through the CD player with fair regularity. The killers to be sure, and that song by Len - steal my sunshine. Bowling for Soup's - 1985.

Man, it's fall here and the colors are spactacular this year. The tree in our front yard was just breath taking for several weeks..losing it's leaves now which means it's time....yeah baby it's time...for....SNOW!!!! Dammit, I'm ready. Every time I walk outside at 6am and it's cold...I smile real big and say BRING IT ON father winter. Some b!!tch on the news last night said the 'el nino' phrase and that it would mean a dry winter this year for us. I nearly tossed my buffalo burger at the TV. Nope, it's going to be a good winter. Buried in snow. It has to be. Yeah...it will be. Positive thinking. That's me, I'm all about it. It's going to snow like mad or I'm going to sell Tbone's never summer to pay for my flight to anywhere in the world where the snow is deep.

Cottonbelly... NYC sessions 1993/2004

Sweet collection of dub remixes and originals by cottonbelly.. Includes a remix of Gregory Issacs "Night Nurse"

Two thumbs up...

I just built a subwoofer box for my car and it is bringing new life to a lot of my old music, especially dub/dancehall stuff. Smooth low bass is gooooood. Time to take some Massive Attack out to the car for a drive...

BTW, anyone have any other good dub/dancehall reggae suggestions? Any particular Mad Professor or Lee 'scratch' Perry I should be looking for?

evilninja
10-22-2004, 01:11 PM
The only Mad Professor that I have heard is the MAssive Attack album...but you probably already have it. SO no suggestions.

The Two Tones collection kicks ass though....I might have to dig it out from some dusty hole.

Other Music:

I have been listening to the newer Modest Mouse album too much.\
As well as the Live Modest Mouse album.

Wilco- A ghost is born
Twilight Singers- She loves you

I've been meaning to buy the new modest mouse disc, have liked them for a while...they were featured on my first sbr compilation I think.

Confluence by Howe Gelb (ex of Giant Sand(worms)).

Which New Pornographers?

I p/u one of their albums a little while back....I like it alot. Have been tempted to pick up the A.C. Newman album(lead singer of New Pornographers). From what I have heard...excellent.

Other things I have been thinking of checking out:

Rilo Kiley(...I keep hearing songs on the radio and havent moved forward on checking out more)

Le Tigre's new one and actually all the old ones too.

Pretty Girls make graves

I am glad you have enjoyed the cd mixes. The swaps are alwys a blast, but usually not so good for shortening a cd buying list.

bought a few recently...

anybody else want to share?

First off...it's been a while since I've posted here. After checkin' the new digs out, I remember why I liked this board.

In the past month or so...

Jill Scott - Beatifully Human, Words and Sounds Vol 2.
Anthony Hamilton - Comin From Where I'm From

Both are supposedly the latest in neo-soul...whatever that means.

Bebel Gilberto - Tanto Tempo
Getz/ Gilberto - a classic album I was missing.

Thievery Corp - Outernational Sound
Thievery Corp - Richest Man In Babylon

Like I need to tell you?

Federico Aubele - Gran Hotel Buenos Aires (I would definitely recommend this one to those looking for a South American influenced "loungey" cd). I can't stop playing this one.

Big Daddy Kane - It's a Big Daddy Thing (Only had this one on tape back in the day. Was time to update my collection)

The Roots - Phrenology (good ish, as usual. Will be seeing this this Sat so we'll see how the new material pans out "live and direct")

Amazon.com is the _devil_, I say! I login to pick out _ONE_ Thievery Corp cd and end up w/ 6 cd's!

Ron, good to see ya...

I see a couple more artists I need to track down now... Gotan Project's last CD still gets a lot of time in by car so it'll be fun tracking down some other Latin'ish loungey stuff.

Big Daddy Kane... there's a name from the past... Definitely dropped out of my memory...

Roots should be a good show. Been a long time since I've seen them live... Hmm, wonder if they are heading up this way...

Anyway, glad to hear all is well. Any plans on heading north for some days in the snow this year? Or is it strictly SoCal?

G$ and Tantrum, thanks for the warm welcome!

Greg, with the way Mammoth is getting pounded so early I gotta take a trip north some time this season. Actually, I was just about to book a reservation for company trip waaaay up North....Whistler...till I found out it fell on the same weekend I'm getting married! Don't think the Mrs-To-Be would be keen on that move.

Looks like The Roots will be playing in Oakland Nov 13. Also looks like they're playing bigger venues. I'm used to seeing them in bar-type atmosphere's...hope the drama isn't lost.

Tantrum, SoCal gets a bit of rain early and the local weather folks are already clamouring "El Nino 04/05!!!" I'll believe it when I see it!

Oh, by the way...Anyone pick up that new Mos Def? I've heard it's a snooozer, much like the latest Talib Kweli. Say it ain't so!

Yep, got the new Mos-Def, first track sounds promissing, by the third, you are thinking it's up to something, but then, it fails to carry on. Good to have if you can download it for free, but I wouldn't pay for the whole cd, doesn't deliver like that. saw the Pixies a couple weeks ago (pretty good) followed by the Beastie Boys the next night (one of the best shows ever), so been listening to a lot of Beasties, old and new (is there a better album than Paul's Boutique?)

also digging:

the new Tosca
Mason Jennings: Minnesota-based folky guy, similar to Jack Johnson

oh, and I got a new WIRED_the mag) CD with the latest mag-cool stuff from b-boys, theivery, le tigre, the rupture...and it's legal to rip and trade!

also been revisiting a lot of old stuff. Primus, Smashing Pumpkins and Blood of Abraham (90's rap done by afro-centric jews..featuring Easy E!)..and a lot of the CD swap mixes...still some of my favorite stuff.
