Feb 7-8, 2004:
Drove into Mammoth Friday night with white stuff falling from the sky. Saturday was awesome! Had too much fun Saturday night and wasn't feeling well Sunday, but still got over 5 hrs of riding in.

Didn't make it to Mammoth Superbowl weekend, but they got 19" new snow on Monday.
Was in Death Valley backpacking.
---------------------------------
January 24-25, 2004:
It was hardpacked all over. Hard to keep an edge, but if you could find a little wind blown the ride was good. A lot of people sliding from the top. Watched one snowboarder eat it at the top, slid all the way down head first, barely missing the rocks. It was scary.

Another fun weekend, even with the crowds! Great conditions, great weather, and great friends!

January 10-11, 2004:
It was a bluebird weekend! Temps were warmer than over the holidays, and we were shedding layers. Light wind, clear skies, and great snow!

up to Mammoth from LA in the late 80s. That's what we used to call our trips because we'd leave LA at midnight and arrive at Mammoth in the morning with just enough time for a breakfast burrito before first chair. We'd be there until closing then haul back to LA just in time for the late night festivities. Unfortunately, I wasn't boarding at the time. I seem to remember that you couldn't ride at Mammoth; you had to go to June to snowboard.:(
Oh well, nice pictures.:D

Nice shots as always. Looks like some fun terrain if the snow is right... Can't wait to check it out on Sunday...

Ripzalot,
We went out of bound to do Hole-in-the-Wall. It was fun.
No Knees,
Now I'm hearing the snow is hard and firm. Some places were described as boilerplate from top to bottom. I'm sure the groomed is good, but it'll be crowded. If we go, we're thinking chair 9 might have good snow. If not, we'll be doing runs off the top. Slight chance I might go snowshoeing/backpacking instead.
But if you see a black helmet with off white silk roses and pigtails sticking out the side, yell out SNOW NYMPH!

I think we'll play it by ear... A little new snow is supposed to start falling, but if it's just dust, we'll probably pass. Who knows... I like going with no plan sometimes. We might be bringing some snowshoes and just take a walk instead as well.
Random question... Cheap lodging on the east side off 395 or around Mammoth? Any ideas?
Thanks.

June Lake is a wonderful place to stay, IMO. Good, cheap lodgings available there. However, they are booked out this weekend (I checked), as is Mammoth. Maybe Crowley Lake area? www.395.com might have some ideas on lodging for ya.
If you end up going, give Woolly a big smooch for me! I'll be snowshoeing up there next Friday, prior to my avy class. Let me know if you find a nice 'shoeing place, if that's what you end up doing.

A friend from the Mammoth Visitor Center said June Lake and Crowley are booked and they're referring people to Bishop or Lee Vining. Before we got our condo, we always carcamped in Long Valley.
We decided this morning to go. Its supposed to be worse than MLK weekend ( http://community.webshots.com/photo/112292559/112430355lFhZBW )
I'll be backpacking at Whitney Portal, Mountaineer's Route. Pack is over 40 lbs with bear canister, ice axe, crampons, snowshoes. Hoping to run into some friends there that left today to bag Russell.

We just spent 4 days in Mammoth, and got 54" new snow Thurs/Friday. Had to use chains on the Blazer for the first time, and spent 3 hrs with chains on/of/on and digging our way into our driveway. We met up with SnowDude's half sister and family that he didn't know about til recently (Jerry Springer didn't show up, though).
Saturday I played photographer and got action shots of the guys (only one other snowboarder). At the end of the day our group of 13 went out of bounds to do Hole-in-the-wall. Part way down we saw 3 snowboarders that were sitting in the snow. We had cell phones out, ready to get help but the said no, they just needed to rest. We took off, splitting up in two groups. One of the snowboarders asked Jeff for help as he skiid by. Craig and Mark were with him, so they helped by carrying their boards, and encouraged the inexperienced, tired snowboarders to keep moving in the thigh deep powder. If they had not heard Brian ask for help, this could have been a bad situation. SAR was happy our guys were there to get them out.
Sunday I rode with mostly snowboarders. Heard Mammoth got 12-14" new snow on Monday.

Spring conditions, blue skies, light breeze except the top, crowded Saturday, but less people Sunday. Beautiful!
Snow is melting fast. Its falling off the roof of our condo in big chuncks, and this weekend we have another broken window, this time going thru both panes.
Saturday 3/6: Started out alone. Hooked up with some fast skiers, then realized I was the only female, and only one other guy on a board and he's fast. After a few runs I was too far behind and didn't want to cut in line, even though they kept waving at me to go there. I ended up with another group I met before, but never rode with. They had a newbie (doing good, though), and we did some easier runs. At the end of the day I headed back to the other side of the mountain and ran into a girl I met last year. She took me up to Huevos, and I rode that for the first time. Ended the day running into another friend on the last run, so it was a good day!
Saturday night: Sushi-fest Forum Gathering at Shogun's. Met a few new people, and after a few of us went to Nevado's for drinks.
Sunday 3/7: Did a few warm up runs, then hooked up with a group of snowboarders (again I was the only female). Rode with my "harem" for a few hours, before they had to head home. Ran into another group of skiers (again, fast ones). This time there was a female, but she was a world class skier a few years back. I was really glad when everyone stopped for lunch/rest. Kowalski skiid with me, and in line we ran into a guy from work that I was trying to hook up with. We did a few runs, then he had to find his carpool. Ended the day with 2 skiers, and I was beat! I wanted to push for 4pm and I made it til 4:10pm!
It was a fun weekend, and got to meet new friends and ride with a variety of people and different levels. Fun weekend!

SnowDude had to work again so this was a solo weekend for me. Two more great days of riding! Did Hole-in-the Wall again Saturday. The UCLA Ski Team was running around half naked. Heard one girl lost her thong and top. Another fun night at Nevado's. Another fun weekend!

I signed up last minute to do the "Vertical Cure" , a scleroderma fundraiser at Mammoth Mountain on Saturday, April 3, which challenges skiers to cover as many vertical feet as possible in one day. This year they had a "snowboarding" division, so decided (Fri afternoon) to do it. My goal was 32K and I doubled it! I finished 6th overall, 1st female and 1st snowboarder.

Calhiker spent a week in the Sierra backpacking and biking, and ending his vacation skiing in Mammoth. So I rented skis for a day. We hooked up with Tessibel and Atomic Boy and hung out on some of the easier runs.
Last run of the day Tessibel caught an edge and dislocated her shoulder. We had a mini forum gathering and a ski-relay and we were all laughing by the time ski patrol got her down to her vehicle. She handled it well, and after a trip to ER, we all went out for dinner and drinks later.
Sunday I was riding my "new" Burton Feelgood and rode all over with at least 20 friends from the mountain. Skier and Asandygal suggested Dragon's Back, since that side of the mountain was closing for the season. Great idea!

Look at you snowboarding girls tearing it up on those weird dual-plank thingies! Love your sassy-pants pigtails.
So, you diggin' your new FeelGood? (That's the board you traded up to as first prize in the photo contest, right?)
Glad sweetie-pie Tessibel's shoulder-pop was not as serious as it might've otherwise been. Injury aside, I think she was happy to be sitting upright in the dreaded sled just 'cause it gave her a better view of ski patrol's fine behind. ;)
Thanks for the pics from the home mtn.

Love the new board! Love my old one too (Burton Witchcraft).
Yeah, I think Tess enjoyed that ride down. He was a cutie! And the view!

Powderhound and Kelly got married in Mammoth on June 12th. The plan was to have a champagne toast at the top and ski a run with the bride and groom. Since the mountain closed a week early, we had to hike to get that run in. We hiked in wedding attire, and got another run in.
I was told if you have to hike it it counts as a day.
