Hey all, I need to pruchase a fly rod for hiking / backpacking/ fishing trips. I have a very old split bamboo rod that I had referbished in the 70's. I actually still fish with it from time to time and it has a sweet action. However, I don't feel like I want to use this rod for fishing on mountain treks for fear of damage or destruction. It is has been in the family for over 120 years and it has sentimental value to me. My old Berkly fiberglass rod has gone the way of the dinasaurs.(damaged beyond use) I've been looking at compostie / carbon fiber rods but can't decide.

That being said; What features or attributes of rods should I be looking for in whats available these days for high altitude lake and stream fishing?

Of course I would want something with good action. Price range I would be willing to spend would be no more than around $500.00 or so.

Well I've been up in Tahoe the last 2 days and yesterday I drove over to Cabela's outlet near Reno Nv. Of course, I checked ot their fly rod department and fooled around with quite a few rods and reels. Before I left the store I ended up buying Cabela's LST 9' - 5wt. - 4 piece fly rod (LST 905-4) and the Lamson Konic 2 Reel. Also had the reel loaded up with Scientific Anglers Sharkskin line (WF-5-F). The set up was a promotional deal they had going on except the line which I upgraded to the Sharkskin. Total price out the door was $259.00. The rod seems to have pretty good back to it and even though the reel doesn't have a "silent" mode it appears to be a fairly good reel for what it is. I think this set up will fit the bill for what I wanted it for. Now all that has to be done is to get it out and use it.
