Ladies and Gents,

I was supposed to go snowboarding with Mark in PA this week while I was driving to Philly. Unfortunately I got in to a fairly serious car accident so I'm not sure if I'm even going now. Anyway I got rear ended while I was stopped in traffic by a guy who was running from the cops. The police said that the guy was travelling between 65-70mph (I think that is like 105-120kph for our metric friends).
For those of you who drive a Subaru I thought I would try to post this picture so you would know how well your car will stand-up in this type of accident. I think it is a pretty good testimate to Subaru's safety that I'm able to be standing next to the car.

I didn't know about Subaru's safety record until I went shopping for one. I remember the salesperson showed us a photo of his WRX after he struck a deer going 70 mph, and he walked out of that accident unscathed (as did the deer).

Damn, bummer about the accident. Glad to see the car was able to give it's life for you though. My fiance' will be glad to hear how well the car she drives would fare in such a collision as well. I'm actually kinda curious about how the other guy faired. I'm guessing he didn't hop out of his car and run away..

Racks look like they stood up well.Glad your ok.A few years back I had a brand new Escort,I remember thinking I never want to get hit in this thing.I got hit at around 40 to 50 mph while stopped at light.I remember seeing the car in the review mirror & saying this is going to hurt, then I let my foot off the break(which helped alot).Full total & a neck brace great way to start the season,if the head rest could've gone higher then I would've been ok. I also broke my mom's Chrysler in half, well the frame at least, put the front wheel in through the floor board, not even a scratch. It's all pretty amazing how some cars protect you & subaru is among the best.Is insurance going to take care of you.Otherwise I'll gladily send you a $10k check, possibly post dated to the next century.

Holy smokes! You're ok?

I drive one of those things. Good to know that when (not if, when) I get rear-ended by one of the many L.A. goofballs who like to tailgate on icy mountain roads, there will be hope for my dashboard knickknacks.

Hope you get to salvage the trip...

Thanks for the kind wishes all. I feel pretty fortunate to have walked away with just a bruise.

I have to go out looking for a new car in a couple weeks (after all the insurance stuff). Ten to one says my first stop is the Subaru dealer!!

Eeek, that looks pretty nasty! If I go out shopping for a new car (later, when I'm grown up and all) I'll check Subaru out then. (Got an alfa romeo right now. Nice and fast, but I bet they look far worse when hit like this)

As for something totally different: how did you come by the surname 'Voetbal'? Dutch soccer heritage?
Just curious..

I have a pretty good european mix like most americans (Dutch, Irish, English, Russian) but not enough of any to claim allegiance to any. I've had the email for about 12yrs and have been a Oranje fan for about 20yrs. So it just matriculated on to my email name some how.
