I haven't given up wandering aimlessly up mountain trails, and I still enjoy a good blast of "weather" while in the forest, and yep, my back still allows me to sleep on the ground. However, I recently picked up a kayak. It's a 12'+ recreational Perception Sundance. Almost every weekend I've been trotting up the local mountain to Big Bear Lake here in So. Ca. and a couple of weeks ago, my sister, myself and her 2 kiddo's drove up to Yosemite N.P. to drop the boats in Tenaya Lake. Viewing Yosemite from the middle of this good-size lake was breathtaking. The water was soooo clear. Plus....we were the only ones on the water. This is yet just another way for me to get out into the outdoors, and it's great :D Ed.

Same here Ed. Being a grad student I've hardly had the time to get out and do much pleasure hiking, but my 14' Wilderness Systems Pungo has create a whole new hobby for me to sink my cash into. I've only been able to get it out 6 or 7 times and mostly on some quiet rivers and a couple little lakes but it has been a blast. I can't wait to get it up to the Boundary Waters (MN) or maybe drag it out west next summer. Maybe if I'm in the right place at the right time I'll paddle up next to you on some still lake in CA.

Yep, Christopher....just another way to get out and enjoy the outdoors. If you ever get the chance, some of the larger lakes in the Sierra's are a real treat....especially in Yosemite. They're not gigantic, but what a way to waste away a morning / afternoon ! :) Ed

So you're a Sycamore now. Do you know George Bakken? He's a professor in EOB with a side job as a father of two twentysomethings, one of whom goes by the screen name GreatDivide14. My condolences on being an outdoor enthusiast in Terre Haute.

Has your 'yak been anywhere exciting locally? I have yet to do anything more interesting than tourist-heavy canoe trips on Sugar Creek and renting 14-foot recreationals at Lake Griffy. Before I started taking summer jobs, I used to spend a lot of time on the Manistee River in Michigan, where my grandfather has a cabin. I'd love to get up to BW or Glacier Bay or some obscure river in the Rockies for a real boat trip.

I've heard the name, but haven't spent much time up there. I've taken my kayak down to a few streams in Kentucky and actually toured a bit on the Ohio from my grandmothers place up river down to downtown Jeffersonville. But of course I have taken it over to Monroe, Lake Lemon, and down Sugar Creek. I need to pick up some kayaking buddies who own there own so I can start to plan some weekend tours up in BW or on Superior to Royale. Anyway back to work...
